Hello Readers! I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you all about my personal wellness journey.
I grew up in south Mississippi, where being overweight is the norm. Living in the south, almost everything is fried. As a child, I was expected to finish my plate, no matter how full I was! Needless to say, I was overweight during my childhood and teenage years.
At age 20, while I was away in college, I decided I wanted to work out, but I had no idea where to start! Luckily, the college had a gym, which was included in my tuition. Since I didn't know what I was doing, I thought I would start my journey by taking some group fitness classes. I started taking step aerobics classes, and had no clue what was going on. I kept coming back, and I kept getting better at it.
By the end of my senior year, I was in the best shape of my life, but something was still missing. I eventually started doing some strength training, but was never consistent with it. My significant other at the time was overseas, and I wanted to look great when he came back home.
In 2003, we moved to central Maryland, and I joined a gym that was conveniently located on my way home from work. I started taking step aerobics again, as well as body pump classes. This is when I started taking indoor cycling classes. There was one instructor in particular that I really liked. His music wasn't all that great, but I loved his workouts. Even though I was sore every time, I still kept coming back.
In 2007, one of my friends from the gym suggested I take the certification. I talked to my SO and at the time he actually supported it. That's a long story in itself, which I'm not going to get into now. Later that year, in a session with a personal trainer (who was also the group fitness manager), I mentioned that I had gotten certified in Spinning, and I got my own classes to teach! I have been on the bike ever since! I am currently not teaching at a facility, but I am teaching virtually! I am also consistent with my own workout. I do a combination of cardio and strength training. I do most of my personal workouts through BODi, by Beachbody.
This was my fitness journey in a short blurb. The point is, keep trying until you get it. Stop quitting, and you'll stop having to start over!
